New free model

Once again, I was creating a new scene for my course at Melies and found myself wanting a specific model: a blu-ray case. Since I did not have a decent model and, as always, all good models found on the internet were paid, I decided to model a case myself.

And, as I was on it, I took the time to unwrap the model and have quite a few diferent movie covers. It’s not 100% accurate, but it kind of looks good enough for mid distance shots.

As usual, feel free to download the complete pack and, if you like it, share with your firends!

Melies is coming to Vancouver and partners with MDS

I’m gonna take the time to post a press release here… It’s from the school I teach in, Melies, and since it’s a huge step for the company I thought I should post it here.

Melies – Escola de Cinema, 3D e Animação, Brazil’s leading 3d animation school just announced their new venture for the upcoming year: Melies Vancouver. With the support from the canadian government, Melies will bring their exclusive methodology and various courses to the Northern Hemisphere. At first, the school will be offering online courses covering animation, modeling, lighting & rendering, ZBrush, VFX and architectural visualization, always counting with renowned industry professionals.

Along with that announcement, a partnership with New Zealand’s Media Design School has also been made official. Students now can now enroll on exchange programs between the two schools with full support, including the possibility of a working visa for those willing to study and work abroad.
More details will be unveiled shortly as Melies is going to release more info on both announcements.

A hotsite has been launched today in portuguese only, but an english version is schedule to launch in the following days. You can check it out here (www.melies.com.br/2012), as well as check the students’ works here (www.melies.com.br under ALUNOS > GALERIAS).

About Melies – Escola de Cinema, 3D e Animação:

Free Model: Umbrella light

Earlier this week I decided to create a simple scene using one of those umbrella lights so common in studios, just for kicks. I thought it would be a fun thing to do between one job and another, so I googled for references and maybe (just maybe!) a free model I could work over. For my surprise, all I could find was a couple good models, and they were rather expensive ones. The free models were all low detail, simplified versions of what I wanted. So I started one of my own, from scratch. It’s highly detailed, with nuts’n bolts included and even welding marks, and I thought I should share it with you guys. Hope you find it as useful as I found it fun.

You can find the model and all maps here.

Cheers!

V-Ray Caustics Tutorial

Hi, there!

This is the first official post here, so be gentle…

Anyway, I’m posting a quick 10-minute tutorial on how to create good looking caustics using V-Ray without spending hours in calculations.

The whole concept is pretty simple and the final setup should not take long nor stand on one’s way while working on a scene. More after the jump…
